Cold Weather Tips

Having grown up in one of the coldest places in America, I can honestly say that I have learned a thing or two about how to deal with the cold. Every winter I find a new way to keep myself warm. Sometimes of these ideas are great, sometimes they are silly and don’t last long. I decided to take a look at some of my common winter clothing practices and make a list for people who also live in hella cold places.

Winter Problem: My Skinny Jeans Always Bunch Up Around The Tops of My Boots

Winter Solution: Tuck Your Jeans Into Your Socks Before Putting Your Boots On

This is one that seemed silly at first, but I find myself doing it all the time. I hate dealing with laces on my boots, so I like to just slide them on. But if nothing is keeping my skinny jeans in place, they tend to get caught up and bunch around the top. I know lots of other girls who also have this problem. So, just tuck your jeans right into your sock, slide on those boots, and get walking with no struggle.

It looks stupid AF, but just keep your boots on and no one has to know.

Winter Problem: My Hands Get Cold But I Still Want To Use My Phone

Winter Solution: Layer Touch-Sensitive Gloves Underneath Fingerless Gloves

Touch-sensitive gloves are probably the greatest thing that ever happened to people with long winters. They allow you to use your phone while keeping it covered. However, I often find that they are not enough on their own to keep my hands warm. So, I layer some fingerless gloves on top and stay toasty warm while Tweeting outside.

If you still find that your hands are too cold, toss a hand warmer in between the first layer of gloves and the second layer.

Winter Problem: The Cold Runs My Phone Battery Down

Winter Solution: Use A Hand Warmer To Keep The Cold Away

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but basically I take a hand warmer, wrap it in a layer of fabric or cloth, and stick in the pocket where I keep my phone. This helps conserve battery while you’re out snowboarding or sledding or whatever it is you crazy kids are doing these days.

Just try and make sure that the hand warmer doesn’t come in direct contact with your phone, because that can lead to overheating. Everything in moderation, people.

Winter Problem: There’s Not Enough Snow For Snow Pants But My Legs Are Freezing

Winter Solution: Leggings As Long Johns

Long Johns are for old people named Dick or Betty, but that doesn’t mean millennials can’t enjoy some toasty legs during the winter. Just take a pair of leggings and layer them on underneath your jeans. You can always take them off once you get to a destination, so I just keep mine stashed in my backpack for emergency cold spells.

A few honorable mentions:

1. If you can only invest in one piece of winter gear, make it the boots. Function over style is important, because your feet can release a lot of heat.

2. Even if you aren’t into winter sports, get a snow skirt. It keeps you warm but isn’t as hard to get on as snow pants. Plus, it’s adorable.

3. Northface isn’t just for hipsters, it’s also for people who don’t want to freeze their asses off. Buy a Northface jacket.

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but it took me twenty-two years to learn them, so hopefully they aren’t too obvious. If they are, then hey, you get bragging rights and can say that you’re smarter than some stranger who runs a blog (whoop-de-doo).

If you have any cold weather tips that have gotten you through the winters, feel free to leave them in the comments below. Also, if you have a post about cold weather tips, please leave the link to it.

Until next time, keep your thermos warm and your skinny jeans tucked in.
