How To Cook Frozen Broccoli
I’ve mentioned in several previous posts that I made a pact to eat all my fruits and veggies at the beginning of the year. At the time, it seemed like a far-fetched New Year’s resolution. After all, it’s kind of cocky to assume that someone with a terrible diet and no cooking experience could begin to feed herself three times a day, every day, forever and ever.
Apparently, it was just crazy enough to work.
Since January, I have gained all new skills and have lessened my eating out to only once a week. I won’t wax poetic about how good I feel, because Lord knows I hate it when I have to stand there and listen to someone’s long-winded, underwhelming tale of their weight-loss journey. It’s obnoxious, and vaguely annoying.
In a nutshell, I feel good as fuck.
I was thinking back the other day to when I first started cooking for myself, in January of this year. To start my goal, I ended each day with grilled broccoli, because that was the only veggie I could remember eating while I was growing up.
Except, I had never had to cook broccoli myself, which meant that I was a total noob. I would often sit down to my “dinner” and find myself biting into floret after floret of undercooked, still-frozen greenery. It was disgusting, and I really thought about giving up early on. I couldn’t handle the thought of another cold piece of broccoli when Taco Bell was right around the corner.
Then, one day, I figured it out.
Through trial and error, I got the broccoli to turn out right time and again. After mastering this veggie, I moved onto as many others as I could find.
So if you’re a college student, and you’re broke, and you want to start eating healthy but you’ve never cooked a damn veggie in your life, then welcome to the Veggie Virgins series. Here, you’ll learn how to cook most veggies and nail it on the first try. No undercooked florets for you, buddy!
As you could have guessed, we’re starting with frozen broccoli. It’s one of the cheapest veggies to buy, and it’s something familiar to most people, so it’s a smart place to start.
Frozen broccoli florets
Balsamic Vinegar (Totally Optional)
Directions For Baking
Preheat oven to 425. Place frozen broccoli on pan, drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar over florets. Bake for 15-17 minutes. Remove from oven, add salt and pepper to taste.
Directions For Grilling
Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to skillet, set heat to medium. Add 2 cups frozen broccoli and 1/4 water, cook for 8 minutes or until fork easily stabs stems. Remove excess water, add salt and pepper to taste.
It’s that simple, trust me. And once you’ve gone through the motions a few times, cooking broccoli will seem like a breeze.
